Goannas v Suns – Round 1 Match Report

AFL Japan Top League – Round 1
Saturday, April 15, 2017 – Minatomirai Sports Park, Yokohama

Tokyo Goannas (17.14 116) – Tokyo Bay Suns (8.3 51)

Footy is back! After a long winter the cherry blossoms have popped open around Japan and that means offseason training gives way to matches. With a 116-51 win, the Tokyo Goannas got off to a strong start on the path to a third-straight AFL Japan Premiership.

Ball up under the lights in Yokohama…it’s almost like there was no break between the Finals in November 2016 and Round 1 of 2017 on Saturday night. But despite being at a different ground, the same intensity and skills were on display as the Goannas stormed to victory.

The match started in the nervy fashion typical of matches between the Goannas and the Suns. It took a cheeky run from the wing for captain Daniel Last to scoop and slot home the first goal of the JAFL season. But after a slow start, the Goannas picked up play and wound up kicking five goals in each of the first three quarters, kicking matching 5.3 in Q2 and Q3 of the match.

However, it’s the defensive efforts that impressed the captain the most. “The tackling pressure throughout the game, the boys played with the same intensity as they finished 2016 with,” Last said. It was that pressure and defensive clamp-down that provided the foundation for the win. “The skill and poise in the back line from Chris ‘Muzz’ Murray and Yuji Yamamoto was excellent.”

But praise wasn’t limited to just a few. As the Goannas headed back into the capital to celebrate former coach and president Tom Bowes’ nuptials, spirits were high and there were kudos all around. Murray, Yamamoto, Andy Last and Sam Ghirardello were key with intercept marks and tackles; Oceans Huynh, Pete Chalmers and Owen Kearney crucial in the midfield; Travis Wilson the usual silk up front; and hard fight from forwards Alex Wyatt and Doug Bonham. On the wings, debutante Takayuki Enomoto and returning veteran Daud Haugherty had massive contributions, goals for each paired with hard running and tackling.

For the first time ever, players voted post-game on the Magners Man of the Match, with Peter Chalmers being the lucky recipient of a carton of Magners Cider compliments of the Goannas' newest sponsor.

The Goannas will take a week to recover before traveling to Kobe for the ANZAC Day Cup Tournament hosted by the Osaka Dingoes on April 22. AFL Japan Top League action is scheduled to return on Sunday, May 21 against the Poseidons.

TOKYO GOANNAS: 9 Things we learned in round 1.

A great start to 2017 season for the NAB Tokyo Goannas. Here is how Goannas Media saw it.

Photo credit to the Peter "Snappsy" Apps.

  1. Play Pete Chalmers in the guts!
With a limited list to choose from, Stand-in coach, Daniel Last, threw around the magnets and down the challenge…and didn’t the Super Nintendo repay the faith! Three sausages and a Magners’ Man of the Match only adding to delight of Goannas’ fans in the rejuvenated Oceans Huynh, who has been released from his 2016 tagging role employed by ex-coach Ghirardello.
Picture
2. Tap Tap Tappy. Tap Tap Tap-aroo.

Speaking of Sam Onigiri-dello, the Peter Wilson Medallist did not skip a beat on Saturday night dominating in the ruck and playing 95% game time. With his big man providing the Goanna’s midfield service like this, Lasty would be salivating at the thought of the remaining rounds in the 2017 JAFL Premiership Season.
Picture
3. A Roccy (kick)start? Sending out a Sausage Saloon SOS!

While the coach would have been delighted with the bag of five from 2016 Kim Bebbington Medallist, Andy Last, he would equally concerned with Owen Kearney’s set shots on goal. With four points for the evening, Lasty will no doubt be enquiring as to the availability of Sav Rocca to aid Boots’ woes in front of goal. The Fans, however, will be enquiring as to the operating hours of the Sausage Saloon and the possibility of the enigmatic small forward returning to Futakotamagawa in 2017.
Picture
4. Much Doge. Such Contest.
Be more Big Dog. Dial D for Dog. The house has been trained down. After a big pre-season, big Dougy Bonham looks as though he is about to rip the competition apart in 2017. With repeat efforts like those demonstrated on Saturday night, the ever-commanding presence up forward will bring a smile to the faces of the Goanna’s mosquito fleet.
Picture
5. Anyway, the best form of offense is a good defence!
There is an age-old debate in sporting circles concerning offence and defence. Some will argue that defence wins premierships, while others will argue the Vince Lombardi line that ‘the best defence is a good offence’. While Round 1 may not settle this debate, it is hard to argue with the Goannas’ defensive duo of Ijuy ‘Yuuuuj’ Otomamay and Chris ‘Chap laps in my Calais’ Murray. The two generals were outstanding down back and, with only 11 scoring shots against the boys in the red and white, will provide opposition coaches with many a sleepless night.
Picture
6. Nuit blanche in Tokyo
Ahead of the opening bounce on Saturday evening, some Goannas’ fans may have had the trepidation that their opening of Season 2017 may coincide with the late arrival of sakura in Tokyo. However with hanami done and dusted, their heroes allowed for no such disappointment courtesy of some exemplary gut running from captain, Dan Last, Daud Haugherty and Takayuki Enomoto. In a debut that showed such poise, hearts were in mouths when the young wingman went to ground late in the last quarter. With the team’s worst fears later confirmed, Goannas Media wishes to take this opportunity to wish Taka well in his recovery!
Picture
7. “Oooooon the left” - a very ‘sinistra’ Uncle Daud
Daud Haugherty is very good on his evil left foot…and doesn’t he know it!
Picture
8. “Back in my day...”
On the topic of veterans, JAFL crowds will be pleased at the sight of Goannas’ elder statesmen Travis ‘Arms’ Wilson and Alex ‘the pest from the West’ Wyatt going around again in Season 2017. In a special moment pre-game, the usually tenacious key forwards took on a more patriarchal tone providing sage advice to the young Goannas’ debutant, Taka Enomoto. Post-game, they no doubt would have been lamenting some of the 2017 rule changes as further evidence of the game ‘becoming soft’. Don’t get them started on fluoro boots or Snapchat.
Picture
9. The shameless plug isn’t dead.
Cometh the four points, cometh the Magners Original Apple cider. The enjoyment of sharing a win with a Magners cider is tantamount to using the NAB Mobile Banking app to pay for your Tokyo Goannas membership; to watching footy in Japan with your mates at the Hobgoblin, Roppongi; or even, sculpting Travis Wilson-like guns with the team down at TokyoFit.

2016 In Review - Warts 'n All

"We need to up our fitness if we are to stop these university sides from overtaking us", barked Sam Ghirardello the newly appointed President and Coach for 2016.

It was hard to argue against that logic as almost half the squad needed replacing after the departures of the likes of reigning Bebbington winner Hiro Masuda, reigning JAFL MVP Gordon Jones, and All-Japan ruckman Seamus Ryan. So that dirty word again, fitness, was the new mantra and the players were held accountable for 12km's worth of running per week and training was pushed forward to the equivalent of going to your grandmother's poem recital - 10am on a Sunday morning.

Still, the players turned out admirably and fresh faces came through the gates to replenish stocks. Our reinforcements came in the guise of Cirque du Soleil back-office staffs, a pilot, and even an AKB48 professional fan. We knew then this was going to be an interesting year.

The first game started with a bang, a thumping win over the Poseidon's and then another over the Komazawa Magpies - both in excess of 100 points. Brett Whyborn became a Fantasy Football must-have racking up the Champion Data stats courtesy of Gordon Jones who is still finding it hard to let go of Japan and gets his fix from watching Goanna replays from Indonesia with his trusty stats book.

Next game was against the Powers and a 9 point thriller ensued. The match won by the Goannas is now infamous for Mitch Stace playing in yellow tights found from Cirque du Soleil's 70's regalia in a sort of modern-day Warrick Capper moment.

KC Imai was also voted best-on-ground in a popular count which inspired him to travel the world thereafter visiting the US and the UK in order to write an International dissertation on AFL. You can find it here: http://tokyogoannas.weebly.com/news/kc-takes-the-jafl-to-the-world. Also, we farewelled Steven Palmer - a popular Goanna.

High on confidence, the Goannas then took to the Grand Final Replay against the Tokyo Bay Suns with half a team but balanced it by having the players putting in double shifts. A memorable 31-point come from behind win was the outcome, spearheaded by Big Alex Wyatt with a 5 goal effort. Also, we again farewelled Steven Palmer (this time minus the chair-off) - still a popular Goanna.

It was then time for a short break with the summer heat well and truly cranked up, and a footy trip to the beaches of Sendai was just the tonic.  A group of Goannas gathered to conduct some Auskick sessions there and courtesy of Jarrod Woodward, the word 'Sausage' bellowed out with gusto is now a slang term used among elementary kids all over Sendai.

A friendly match was also arranged with the Sendai Port footy club who kindly organised the highlight of the trip, a tug-of-war competition set up with Sendai's illustrious tug team. Big Douggie Bonham took the honors with a fine effort of being immovable. It was on this trip that Jason Fan was bestowed the prestigious 'Bucket' award for driving the intoxicated around. The 'Bucket' was originally a 48-piece chicken McNugget box which adorned the members of his beloved AKB48.

Back in Tokyo, the last game of the regular season against the R246 Lions was scheduled the morning after the actual AFL Grand Final. So it was those early hours that the team missing a few key players trudged to Saitama still smelling of VB's and chicken parma. A valiant effort was had, but Michito Sasaki again proved difficult to curtail, his troops assisting to inflict the Goannas first loss in 2 point classic.

Still the Goannas finished the regular season in 1st place on percentage closely pursued by Senshu Powers and their stockpile of young talent.

Before the finals kicked into gear, the daddy of all tours was still to be had. The 2016 Asian Champs in Ho Chi Minh! With logistics and planning all finalized, the Goannas teamed up with Dingoes, Suns, and Hawks alike to bring together a formidable looking team on paper.

Sadly, the team was grilled by media at home after being jumped by bitter rivals China in game 1 who came better prepared.

After a pep-talk the humbled group was able to recollect and get some synergy going by the second game, only pipped by 4 points after an apoplectically bad call from an umpire at the dearth handed Cambodia the winning goal. Picking ourselves up after a bit of a cry just in time for the final game, we finally managed our first win at the Champs for some time after beating a Tom Liberatore-led Macau side. No, you didn't read that wrong. We beat Tom Liberatore who ended up getting a bit of a slap on his wrist with the Bulldogs for putting himself at apparent risk of injury although the main risk was more likely a sunburn to his noggin: goo.gl/ab1QWM

During the final minutes of the win, Jason Fan dislocated his elbow and had the bone joint practically sticking out from his skin. However, showing true grit he got up less than 2 hours later and put his hand up to represent Japan in the Grand Final sprint finishing third after false starting and idly watching the rest of the contestants gas themselves by sprinting the full 100 before knowing it had to be restarted. It was a great strategy.

Owen Kearney himself also enjoyed being asked if he was a pilot numerous times during the festival after a preview article stated that he was - and that people should ask him about it.

Moreover, the fantastic tour gave the team a chance to reunite with legendary ex-premiership coach Gordon Jones who took up reigns as Japan player / coach. He spent the day before the tournament preparing by walking around Ho Chi Minh with an empty coconut used as a vomit bucket after drinking too much beer the night prior. It certainly was a grand ol' tour and you can hear the rest of the shenanigans by joining us down at Hobgoblins for a pint in the new year at some point!

All good things come to an end though, and back again in Tokyo it was time to put our heads down and start preparing for the Semi-Finals. A rematch against Michito's R246 Lions.

Held at the home of football, the coliseum that is YCAC, the Goannas raced out to a strong lead at the first stanza and never relinquished. In the end it was a comfortable 50 point win which was soured by Jarrod Woodward picking up a wristie (the bad kind) after racking up a lazy 40 disposals. Sadly, the fracture would rule him out of the Grand Final. Yuji Yamamoto continued his fine season being voted best on ground in a dominant display which was bitter sweet for him seeing as the dominant display was as a full-back - rubber stamping his role for the big dance.

Speaking of the big dance, it was a 6 day turn-around, and the Goannas were back at YCAC again gunning for back-to-back status against the Senshu Powers - the surprise packets of the season. The one distinct advantage the Goannas had this year around was that James 'Bash' Dennier was no longer a water boy (you may remember this incident: goo.gl/uTDxLa) but an actual on-field player.

A ferocious beginning entailed and through some Daniel Last desperation (knocking himself out by spoiling with his face), and Mitch Stace aggression (this time wearing red tights probably from Robin Hood), the Goannas got up by 40 points. A classy 4 goal effort saw Andrew Last take out the JAFL awarded BOG, while 36 touches ensured Brett Whyborn the Goannas voted one. Both capping off fantastic seasons on the biggest stage of all. The Powers team despaired in their loss but the Goannas were uplifted knowing how well footy in Japan is progressing and as a young side the Powers will be there to challenge again.

There was more silverware to come though for the boys in red and white. On football's night of nights, the JAFL award ceremony, Daniel Last made it into the All-Japan team on the forward flank after a prolific 3-goal season. Also, Sam Ghirardello beat out Japan's finest to win the 2016 Peter Wilson award - the Brownlow medal equivalent - to make up for his idol Jobe Watson losing his a month earlier. Asked how he felt, he quoted another boyhood idol's famous words when he said "I'm shocked to be here".

In their elation at receiving their well-deserved honors, Lasty (club treasurer) and Ghirra gave the thumbs up in shouting the entire University fraternity a round of beers at the afterparty. Coincidentally, Goanna members have been told to expect a hike in next years membership fees.

Finally, it was time for the Goannas Kim Bebbington Awards Night, this year held at the world-class RIAD. Bedecked in matching ties and pocketchiefs, the team cheered on as Andrew 'Firsty' Last stormed home to win by a handsome margin over first-year gun Brett Whyborn and Ghirardello. It was a night of celebration as evidenced by Owen Kearney's moves on the dance floor and Chris Murray making it rain for his Instagram poses.

So as the curtain finally closes on 2016's edition of Goannas Footy, we'll head off into winter hibernation belly full of medals and fond memories. From the Goannas family, thank you for all your support and we'll be gearing for a ripping 2017! Go 'Annas!

2016 JAFL GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

25/11/2016

The heaters are on, the snow is falling (?!) and work Christmas parties are nearly in full-swing – it smells like JAFL Grand Final time! For the third year in a row, the Tokyo Goannas have made it to the last weekend in November as they attempt to go back-to-back following their premiership victory in 2015.

After a strong win against a determined Lions outfit in the semi-final, the Goannas come up against the spritely, hard running Senshu Powers who are looking to become the first university side to win the competition since the AFL Japan Top League was established in its current form.

The mid-season meeting between the two teams saw the Goannas sneak away with the win, but only by 9 points! The Powers have not lost a game since, so the boys will need to be at their best if they want to stop the opposition’s run and lift that premiership cup for the second year in a row.

A fractured wrist in the semi-final will see the Goannas go into the game without one of their stars, but their list runs deep and their team-first game plan has proven difficult to stop all season.

Head on down to YCAC this Saturday to support the Goannas and watch what is guaranteed to be a cracking game of Aussie Rules between the two best sides from this season!

The match kicks off from 17:20 and will be followed by a post-match function in the YCAC bar from 19:30. The Goannas have then organized buses (2,000 yen) for the team and all their supporters to head to their home bar in Roppongi, Hobgoblin for an after-party with beers, music and great people.

Be sure to get along to cheer on the boys in red and white! Can’t wait to see you all there!

Go ‘Annas!!

It couldn't be much better than finals footy on a great day, with great teammates and very good competition.  The Goannas headed into the Semi Finals against the only team to beat them during the regular season.  The Lions used excellent running and JAFL legend Michito to beat the men in red and white by five points during the season.

With both teams fielding their best line-ups and the grand final up for grabs, it was going to be a deserved winner either way.  The game started like a heavy weight prize fight with both teams kicking warning shots across the other's bow, until the Lions drew first blood with a nice little snap shot bouncer from thirty five yards out.

However, that goal would be one of only two first half goals surrendered by the Goannas.  Full credit to Best on Ground Yuji "The Husband" Yamamoto for keeping his vows and marrying himself to the Lions dangerous (and punchy) full forward. The back line was fantastic all day, Yuji's superior physicality, combined with (three time) pilot-of-the-month award winner Owen Kearny's aggressive tenacity tamed the Lions' full forwards nearly completely. Complimented by a savvy move by Bash to eliminate a long time hole in the defence by keeping himself out of the game, opportunities were snuffed out like a pick-up game in Futakotamagawa.

The Goannas were quick to fire back, perhaps bemused by the aggressive play of Lions legend Michito, a great display of composure and a confident 40 meter boot got the big red and white machine in motion. Brett's goal was the catalyst to a dominant 1st half.  Giving away nothing, the Great Wall of Ghirra and his midfield mates seemed to intercept every kick out, never giving the Lions the chance to build any momentum. The midfield joined by Dan "I Never Should Have Told My Brother About This" Last, Pete "Super Nintendo" Chalmers, and KC "And The Sunshine Band" Imai were impenetrable through the square.

A great play by Shin-boner, penetrating though the hot center to the Lions defence lead to a Goannas behind...  The slightly off target kick was emblematic of the half, the Goannas dominant in possession and contest by not quite wearing their kicking boots.  However, it was First Last, first of his name that launched the first of a enormous batch of counter attacks, gained huge territory and distribution that put the Goannas on the front step.  With enough opportunities the Lizards found their range and ended the half with a 59-18 lead.

Playing in his preferred lock-down role, Oceans chased and harried the Lions top player all day, saying after the game that he wished he could "have that role every game".  But the eye test had to give much credit to Jarrod Woodward; slamming into every contest, slick in possession the legal ace merged in for pocket distribution and acquired valuable territory.  Tragically his wrist injury (which was totally acquired during the game and not at all in the shower afterwards) threatens his participation in the Grand Final.

The Midfield excellence continued, a memorable quarter from Jason "The Intimidator" Fan leapt to the defence of a helpless Mitch "You can't put in defence now" Stacy by standing his very tippy-toes to get face-to-collarbone with the Lions aggressor.  Big Fanny let all around know that type of behavior would not be tolerated.  In a composed move, the Goannas fought back the best way by helping themselves to a somewhat anti-social helping of sausage rolls.  The pick of which was again from Jason Fisticuffs Fan, who snapped a beauty from 20 meters out and really got around himself.

With every opportunity to coast, the Goannas poured it on in the forth quarter, maintaining and eventually extending their lead.  A tough angle Sauzzo from coach Ghirra seemed to really settle affairs after an a period of pressure from the Lions.  A special mention has to go out to coach Big Sam (Ghirra, not the one going to prison).  With an anonymous retired Goanna legend quoted as saying "You don't experiment in November" all of Field Marshal Ghirardello's moves were the right ones:  Blaireman Mao could have written a little red book on how to launch attack from defence in place of Chris Murray.  The Muzzle brought former Goanna Dean Dowey to heal in the ruck.  Mitch responded to the opportunity to run up front by leading the team in both goals (4) and punches earned. Not enough can be said about Manimal Yuji Yamamoto who put the game in lock-down like the evil warden from The Shawshank Redemption.

Another big mentioned to our boys who ran away to join the Cirque.  A huge effort to successfully ride the shinkansen to Tokyo, both Brett and Mitch are Totemic fixtures in a team looking to win back to back Grand Finals for the first time in many a year.

Semi-final Preview

18/11/2016

After a successful home and away season, the Tokyo Goannas find themselves in the semi-finals of the Japan Australian Football League this weekend.

They will come up against the R246 Lions who they played in the final round of the season, resulting in the Goannas’ only loss for 2016. The Lions have perhaps been the surprise packet of the competition this year, being lead strongly by Japan’s no.1 player Michito Sasaki, former-league best and fairest Dean Dowey, and powerful forward Jun Sekiguchi.

The Lion’s run proved too strong for the Goannas in their last encounter, but the Goannas will welcome back a number of key players this week including Captain Dan Last, Coach Sam Ghirardello, games-record holder Travis Wilson, and experienced on-ballers Jarrod Woodward, Andrew Shinners, and Josh Bootsma.

The Goannas will need to be back to their best if they want to turn the result and advance to their third Grand Final in as many seasons.

With the recent ledger between the two teams at 3 wins a piece, this one promises to be a belter! Make sure you get down to YCAC this Sunday to support the boys in red and white! Bounce from 13:10.

KC takes the JAFL to the world

12/9/2016

One and half year has been already passed since I started a new job with the situation such that once I go on a business trip, I need to stay 2 or 3 countries for several weeks. Although moving within a short term and unaccustomed life are hard for both physically and mentally, with my mind that I want to socialize with people and make unforgettable memories at each place, I’ve started to jump into the trainings of each local Footy team.

I got to know about Australian Football for the first time when I, 30 years old at that time, was given an opportunity for language training at Melbourne. Though until then I had nothing to do with sports, no sooner had I watched Grand Final in 2014 there and been overwhelmed by that frenzied game than I joined to my current team – Tokyo Goannas just after coming back to Japan and 2 years have been almost passed up to the present time

You are more than welcome!”
Even though I am almost the same as a beginner, the all responses as a result of my initial contact to 5 teams were equally “You are more than welcome!” Due to my work assignment, I could not make it to 2 team trainings but the impression of the rest 3 teams training / game were as follows:

1. Training with Edinburgh Bloods on 9 Jun, 2016
It is light even after 10 pm at Edinburgh as if it is noon and there are many people walking or chatting everywhere in cities or parks as I looked at during lunch break,.
Training is held at the large park called Medows next to Edinburgh university on every Thursday from 6pm. At that day, about 15 players including a Colombian and local people other than Australians were gathered and we trained through various menus for about 2 hours. It was a fulfilling day as I was told by one of the members with a grim face “I will pay for you for coming all the way from Tokyo” and had a beer with some players soon after the training.
As this has been revealed after training that Evan Kerr, the former Goannas player, was also played with Bloods so I realized that we are all connected through Footy!

Picture

2. Game with Calgary Kangaroos on 6 Aug, 2016
This team’s response for a message if I can participate on the training was “Bring your boots mate! You are also welcome to play in our game!” I was a bit surprised by this message but I thought this would also be a great chance to experience a game abroad and jumped into the real game held on weekend during my stay in Calgary. This team seems to be organized of several sub teams and I played as a member of “Bears”. After adjusting the number of players to be equal for both opponents, we played fully for 20 minutes x 4 quarters without no member rotations. As the result was our defeat by 6 points, I don’t know why but I was happy to see that trainee from Canada or New Zealand played their best as I did.
After the match, we moved to city central and had beers with each teams at bar.

3. Training with Nashville Kangaroos on 16 Aug, 2016
It was a very hot and humid day (though it was mild according to Roos member). The training was held from 6pm at Elmington Park, a bit far from central city, and almost 10 players were gathered by using their cars.
Leading the training by an experienced member, this team also provided various structured menus. Training itself was for about 1.5 hour and I was taught basics of how to mark and hand ball individually, all of which convinced me that the training was so exciting.

What I feel from these experiences is that as long as you have passion that you want to play Footy, every team will welcome your joining no matter how many years you play Footy, no matter how old you are, and no matter how fluent you can speak English. This culture was exactly the same as what I felt when I initially contacted Goannas. Furthermore, the contents of training themselves which I experienced at each country were almost similar to what Goannas do every week, the character of belonging players, the atmosphere of a team, all suggest me that Goannas is a global standard.

1. How did you come to be interested in AFL? Also, how did you support the team you now support?
It was when I saw the 2014 AFL Grand Final at Melbourne. As I’ve been very interested in Australia, I felt I’m not yet an Australian expert and my thought got stronger “Then I should be able to talk about what the AFL is!” That’s a whole story to answer it.
I’m now a Cats supporter but this also comes from a bit funny story. The very first game I saw at Melbourne was Cats vs Kangaroos and at that time I thought anyhow I would buy some goods, then I hoped to have ones whose team would more likely to win, so I asked a shop girl assistant “Which team is more famous?” then she said without stopping an instant “Hum it’s definitely Cats!” Since then my next desire has become to be a Catman at the stadium.

2. Did you miss AFL when you came back to Japan? Is this why you joined the Goannas? How did you find us?
As the return date to Japan was fixed, I didn’t miss anything, but as I mentioned, I wanted to play Footy as soon as possible so I searched about Japanese AFL through internet soon after arriving at Japan, which led me to find out that there is also AFL in Tokyo. If I do it at all, I wanted to do it with Aussies so I contacted Goannas directly.

3. Were you surprised about anything in regards to the JAFL?
Yes, definitely. I didn’t know about AFL at all within 30 years of my life, so I didn’t have any ideas that there are well-organized teams and league.

4. How do you see the culture of the Goannas? You seem to be very proud about your affiliation with us which is great.
I think Goannas is, so to speak, a small Aussie community, and not only the character and atmosphere of players and supports but also the way of drinking at bar itself can I feel as what I perceived in Australia. For Australian enthusiast like me, every week training is not like “going to training” but like “going to experience Aussie”

5. Was it a difficult game for you to pick up? How did you find the challenge? What was most difficult?
As I hadn’t played any sports before Footy, frequent injuries are the cause of worry. I’ve experienced the hard tackle which caused sharp pains when coughing after several weeks or jammed fingers when carelessly touching the ball which made my fingers severely swollen. Thanks to this, it was comfortable for not being able to wear a marriage ring.
I know I’m not so young so I keep my mind to do sufficient warmup before a match.

6. What do you like most about playing AFL and what do you think is your best skill so far.
Honestly I’m still within a beginner so that I cannot tell my strength but to defeat the contest, to mark firmly and to kick accurately & calmly are my fundamental focuses to the game

7. What is your favorite and/or proudest moment so far with the Goannas?
The moment of last year premiership was completely fascinating after all. As I couldn’t play much at that game, I was purely proud of being one of members at the very instant to get victory by a narrow margin after last minute turnover
By the way, Goannas has won all games where I played at the moment.

8. Have you ever won any sports championship before last years JAFL Grand Final?
Strictly speaking, I played at a little league baseball when I was elementary school student but had almost no sports experience. Therefore I hadn’t won any championship for sports nor as a team.
When I was at high school, I got a group gold prize at Brass Band Competition…

9. What do you hope to achieve now from the sport and the club?
This may come from that I want to socialize with variety of people; that is I’d like more and more people regardless of whether they are Japanese or foreigners, or as players or supporters to affiliate with Goannas. I believe it’s due to a lot of viewpoints or characters that the spice of a team or variety of tactics will be enhanced. Especially for Japanese, I hope to cultivate the soil to welcome them.

10. Who in the Goannas have helped you the most to develop? Also who do you think is the best player you have seen play?
It’s definitely Gordon. When I saw his tattoo, I was a bit scared but he always pointed out what he was concerned, and his play style was a good material to learn. Gordon always said “Put pressure!” and this mindset came to bear fruit for my each play at the recent bruising game with Powers

11. If I said to you one day you could perhaps become the first ever Japanese person to be the President of the Goannas in over 20 years of our history, what do you think about that?
Individually, I’ve been fond of a position like a backseat player ever since, so if I would be a management, then chief shadow cabinet would be best fit for me lol. Okay seriously, If I were to be a President, as mentioned before, I would play an active role as a bridge between Japanese community and Goannas. First of all, I would start to make high-quality Goannas website for Japanese version. Current Japanese version website is too cheap lol.
But my real opinion is that Goannas is the only Aussie main team in Japan and from this point the top of the team should be Australian, I think.

12. What advice would you like to give any Japanese person who is interested in the Goannas but are afraid to join because of the language and culture barrier?
I’d like to say loudly about this topic. Everyone, it’s absolutely no relevance at all whether you can speak English well or not. I’m proving that fact. Special mind that you want to play Footy with Aussies is the only requirement and, as long as you meet this, I believe anyone will be more than welcome to this unique community. You can understand what I say here if you jump into our training once so feel free to contact us!
