2010 Goannas Black Tie Ball
The Successful 2010 Goanna Ball
The 2010 Goanna Ball was held on Saturday 3rd of July at the Australian Embassy and once again the event was a raging success. The girls were gorgeous, the blokes polished up well and the music was Aussie and upbeat which led to the Goannas firing on all cylinders.
The night started out with the traditional pre ball drinks fosters, pure blonde, VB, Crownies and an array of Aussie wine. The girls in their dresses reminded us of a scene from the car park on Melbourne Cup day and only lacking the funky hats. The old boys and new boys Wayne (richo2), Brendan, American Mike, and Rodey looked particularly dapper.
Following the drinks, Huddo, our resident MC, took control of the evening
and we knew we were in safe hands.Oges started the night off with a customary presidential address. It was short & sweet and up to the Ronnie Mitchell standard. Hideki Miyasaka from the JAFL delivered a few words on behalf of the JAFL. This year an extra dimension was added to the evening with presentations of the Golden Goanna Award. The recipients were Annmaree Scanlan (2010) no explanation needed, Ronnie Mitchell (2009 – Inaugural winner) and James Dean (1993) for the design of the logo and the artwork he has done for the Goannas over many years. The awardees are fitting indeed for their significant contributions to progressing the Goannas and AFL in Japan.
Following the awards the Goannas were treated to a sumptuous Banquet put together by Kiwi Kitchen and thetraditional Japanese utterances of oishi-so were heard fromthe line with the boys happy that there was more than enough to fill the lads. The dessert was the traditional Australian favorites chocolate cake and Pavlova (although the Kiwis might argue the point! Many thanks to Kiwi Kitchen.
After the meal we were treated to the traditional 2010 Goanna video by Simon Cumming. He also wowed the crowd with the subtitling of a youtube “Hitler losing the plot” favorite. It is always a pleasure to watch the hidden talents of the Goannas expressed and we think everyone would agree that Simon did a great job.
The night was a special night for one Goanna when the committee decided that it was about time a Life membership was awarded and Travis Wilson was nominated as the sixth life member of the Tokyo Goannas. The look on his face was of surprise but many in the crowd knew it was well deserved
No Goannas Night would be complete without the Australian Ambo (the Hon. Murray McClean) dropping by and giving his take on the present situation of the Geelong football Club and Huddo managed to glean some information about his previous postings in North Korea and insights into the reclusive state.
Finally we held the raffle and auctions. The prizes included a signed
Goannas shirt and a JAFL signed footy plusJosh Pearce donated one of his art works which was a highly sought after item. We were lucky to have some generous bidders Mick Lay, The pres and our Publican Neil from Paddy’s which all helped out in raising a few $$$ for the club.
From then we were wowed with music from Josh, Oges and Rowey the Goanna resident DJ. The crews were up dancing and the night slipped away from the Embassy to Daikanyama but that is another story! Or more stories!
Once again the Goannas showed that they not only can play footy. .Special thanks Loz, Dan, Brendan and the many others that helped put the night together and of course to all of our sponsors who donated prizes and who continually support us. All the best for a grand 2010 and hope to see you all again soon at the next event, game, beer……
