Match Report

The Goannas played their second home game of the 2009 calendar year against the much improved Leopards (a combined Uni side). The venue for this match was a new pitch 20 mins from Takadanobaba which made transfers to the ground very accommodating.

The first qtr got off to a flyer with Mike Huberts dominating the ruck and feeding plenty of ball to McGrath and Bowden in the guts. They in turn had plenty of clearances which resulted in quick goals to Sullivan and Mitchell up forward. The Goannas have opened games well and this was no exception with 6 goals on the board by the 12 minute mark. The defence led by new boy Peyton was very effective and was well supported by Ogilvy and Kollias. Hill played a good game deep forward or on the wing and got plenty of loose ball. Cole, after been beaten early by Take up forward closed the qtr well with excellent defensive pressure.

The second qtr was a repeat of the first was Bowden again starring with a great running goal out of the centre. Cunningham supporting Huberts in the ruck played well and provided some solid contested ruck work which resulted in Goannas clearances. New boys Kleimann and White did well when introduced. Peyton was dour in the back half and his attack on the ball was exemplary the Goannas have unearthed a veteran talent in this one. Wilson was again brilliant through the middle and his decision making set up further goals to the Goannas key forwards. The Goannas by 6 goals at the long break.

After some encouragement by Apps at the half time huddle the Goannas came out strong in the third with none better then Edmonds with game breaking, gut busting bumps and tackles. Lee also showed some flashes of brilliance mopping up loose ball on the wings. A highlight of the qtr was Woods, who after receiving a well executed hand ball, ran forward and slotted one from 25 m on the run a solid team lifter.

The Goannas stepped off the gas in the last and shared the game time with Huberts having a go down back on the dangerous Take and Sullivan having a pinch hit in the ruck to good effect. Bowden finished off a best on ground performance with his 5thand when Sullivan and Mitchell bagged their 6thand 5threspectively the game was over. McGrath took marks everywhere to again feature as a standout. In the end the Goannas comfortably by 37 pts.

Thanks to Appsy for the home brew after the game and to everyone who helped out with gear and administration on the day.
