2008 Goannas vs Komazawa Magpies

Goannas 168 def Magpies 33

The Tokyo Goannas are once again the minor Premiers in the JAFL Top League. Congratulations everyone. Against the Komazawa Magpies, a young, developing side, the final result was never in doubt but the Goannas importantly played to high level and have strong momentum for the upcoming Semi Final. With a couple of key players out with Injury or away it was left to 9 hardy souls who trekked out to Narita on an overcast but generally favorable day for footy. Coaches report on players on the day; Ron – BOG. Very accurate kicking (missed him at the Narita Cup). Finished with 10 goals, 5 in the first at full forward and spent the rest of the day having an impact at half-forward, on the ball or briefly in the ruck (where he hurt his finger – like a bear with a thorn in it’s paw) Shep – Smash and grab style scared the shit of out of the Japanese boys. Typically spent 2/3 of the quarter in the forward line and then used as pinch hitting ruckman. Can defy Physics with some of his kick trajectories. Hurt his knee at the end (like early in a sports movie but you know that he’ll come back and win back his honour in the end). Jason – Most of the day spent as a high half forward (blocking Japanese run from half back) with some time loose in the backline. Very good in and under work and alway gets his head over the ball. Calf Cramps towards the end of the day (like that guy in the Marathon – you know the one). Brenton – The main ruckman on the day was also a strong marking target when resting forward. Particularly strong second half when he moved to his more natural role as Center Half Back (and kicked goals from there). Popped his shoulder later but it went back in and he was OK (like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon). Simon – Captained the team admirably and started on the ball. Filled a variety of roles during the day (backline general, forward line lieutenant etc) and jagged 3 goals. Came in under an injury cloud with a mild shaving nick (like Norman Gunston). Oags – Started on the Magpies defender and shut him down before moving onto the ball to strong effect. Always at the bottom of packs, and set up one of the best goals of the day – a handball through to traffic to a forward proving he has no left foot (unlike the Academy Award Winning Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot) Spaceman – Spent most of the day on the ball (very creative) before being moved to marshal the defense in the last quarter (very stingy). The coach preferred him with a beard and requested him to grow an even bigger one (like Tom Hanks in Castaway). No injuries. The New Guys: Pete: Close to best on ground. Goannas have picked up a top player here. Very poised with the ball and breaks tackles. Most of the day on the wing or on the ball and booted 5 classy goals (like Andrew Jarmen before he went loopy) Will: Another great pickup and high in the votes. Started in the middle and then did everything (shut down their full forward one quarter and then booted a couple at half forward the next. Very courageous player getting in and under and very versatile (like gun player/musician/celebrity/actor/entertainer Russell Robertson) Coach Report provided by Brenton Phillips; Pubes: Coached the Goannas to a nice win on debut. Heavy handed at times, maybe a bit too much agro and derogatory comments… got white line fever and took out some emotional issues on some of the boys. In the end did the right thing though (like Darth Vader). Below photos thanks to JAFL
