2006 Season Preview
Starting off we will slug it out with the Irish for the Ned Kelly Cup. The results over the past few years have been absolutely shithouse. I think we have claimed the silverware once in 6 years, and the winning year was due to our favorite son Aussie`s hard running thru the lines and predatory goal instinct. This year’s format has changed somewhat with the rules conforming to `international rules` for all 4 quarters. I dunno if this will help us more, physicality wise yes, continually trying to kick a round ball straight no… Last year’s event was won off field by the Goannas with highlights including the trolley commander Anthony Millen`s debut, Mad Dog Hunter breaking his toe during the post-match festivities and 10 hungry Goannas emptying a kebab van full of stock in 5 mad minutes. Osaka trip is second on the agenda and for those of you boys who reckon that I rave on a like a lunatic too much about this trip…just wait and see. Not only did we kick their arses down in Kansai last year on the footy field for our first win away but it was a great bonding trip. Those participants that took part in the insane 12 hour drinking blur starting at Tokyo station at 8pm Saturday night will more than likely nominate this binge session as the highlight. Reputations and nicknames are fully earned on this trip and some of the stories from last year are now a part of Goanna folklore… One example to whet your appetites, in March last year, a rugged hard working innocent family man/father of 2 departed on the 8:13 Nozomi bound for Shin Osaka, on our return exactly 24 hours later he answered to the name of Bump & Grind and thus the legend was created! Be there lads, or you`ll kicks yourselves…(13 starters so far confirmed) In April we take on the touring Shanghai Tigers and local Eastern Hawks out at Narita. A Saturday fixture that has the makings of a top day of footy. These guys have traveled a fair distance for these matches and we wanna make sure we give them a solid hit out. The opportunity to play a slower style of game against fellow `gaijin` will be a riot. For those of you needing to get the day off work, put in your requests now for Saturday the 8th of April. We rarely get the chance to play touring teams, which makes this game, pretty unique, the Narita locals are already talking about this mouth-watering fixture…or not. Narita Cup, our big domestic tournament and the one we have struggled in big time these past 2 years. This is an awesome weekend with a stack of footy to be played. Six teams will be competing in 06, which team is gonna wrestle the cup from the Sam`s grasp this year? Box Hill are primed for battle and the new Osaka boys will be bringing up a big squad, the Eastern Hawks will have all their old boys back and pumped up for this big day and the Sam`s will be as tough as ever to get their hatrick of cups. In years gone by the Goannas have come together this weekend without having played much the months prior to the tournament. Thus our performances have been below par as most guys hardly know each other. THIS YEAR I reckon we can take the bastards out and put the Narita Cup back in it`s rightful spot, well…we don`t have a trophy cabinet as such but at least we can show it off in the Clubhouse or something. Point being, if we train and play together in the lead up to the cup then we will play united as a TEAM on both days. I am sure we can wrest back the cup from those bloody uni boys and savor this tournament in 06. The Asian Champs this year will be held in Helgus Helgusson`s old backyard, Jakarta. Seventeen blokes joined in last years tournament and we came a very respectable 3rd and won a lot of respect from our Asian footballing neighbors. Indonesia will be pretty cheap and considering this is a once a year event it is well worth shelling out the yen to be a part of it all. More news to follow in the coming months but keep this in the memory bank… The GF in November is our holy grail at the end of a long season and I am still gutted the Sam`s pipped us last year, with assistance from those maggots…Anyway, no real need to introduce or build this game up. This is why the Goannas train and play all year, to smash those uni. lads in the biggest game of the year and enjoy the sweet taste of premiership glory. Lets just make sure we make it as the JAFL look like introducing a few more teams than last year. Stay tuned. Will Flanno be able to back up his B&F year of 05, will Trav and his arms be taking Bebbsy home this season, will Yasu be the first Japanese winner of Bebbsy, will Ballsax continue his amazing record of playing 17 games consecutively without his skin tight shorts splitting, will Ronboy be the first centurion goal kicker??? These and many other questions will be answered in the premiership season of 06 as the Goannas prepare to embark on a 9 month stretch of playing the best game in the world, Aussie Rules Footy!
